Tiger Woods hasn’t played competitive golf since he withdrew from the PGA Championship back in August, and has since parted ways with his former swing coach, Sean Foley. Woods has been somewhat “off the grid” since suffering the back injury that plagued his season, but he shed light Monday on what he’s been up to at a press conference for his upcoming tournament, the Hero World Challenge.
“Golf wise, nothing. I haven’t swung a golf club yet,” Woods said. “I’ve been busting my butt in the gym.”
It’s not surprising that he hasn’t swung yet knowing the effect a back injury can have on a golf swing, but it’s positive to hear that he’s continuing to work out. He said he’s hoping to regain that same speed he’s had in the past, as well as the explosiveness we’re accustomed to seeing.
But there is one thing he isn’t doing: looking for a swing coach.
“Right now, I’m trying to get physically better, stronger, faster,” Woods said. “I’m in no hurry to look for one. I’m just focused on what I’m doing.”
As far as competition goes, he’s not yet ready, but hopes to play in the Hero World Challenge in December (formerly the Northwestern Mutual World Challenge).
“Would I like to play? Yes. But I’m not physically ready for it yet,” Woods said. “I want to have that speed back again.”
But he wasn’t all serious in his comments. Woods let us know what he thought of Rory McIlroy’s comments about himself and Phil Mickelson being on the “last few holes” of their careers.
“I thought it was funny,” he said. “Phil has less holes to play than I do. But it’s reality. We’re all older.”
I don’t think anyone expected Woods to take offense to the comments, especially knowing the friendly relationship he and Rory have.
The Hero World Challenge will be held Dec. 4-7 at Isleworth Country Club in Florida, with this year being the first time the event will be open to the public.
