It might not be as monumental of a decision as Scotland potentially breaking away from the United Kingdom, but a vote on Thursday may finally break down the gender barrier at the Royal & Ancient (R&A) Golf Club.
According to reports, various R&A committee members will vote on a ballot that includes welcoming women to join the centuries-old golf organization, which was founded in 1754.

Currently, while many of the golf courses that fall under the R&A’s umbrella are open to females who want to play golf, women are unable to actually become members. After Thursday’s vote, that may all change.
Golf has been under the proverbial magnifying glass over the last few years for its historically insensitive approach to incorporating women into the game. The women’s rights movement inside the game gained a great deal of traction when Augusta National Golf Club finally welcomed its first female members in 2012.
The R&A has yet to change its views, but if altered this week, it would mark another landmark in regard to golf equality.
