Paul Azinger remains the most popular man in the game of golf following the disappointing U.S. loss at the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.
Offering his first interview since the loss, and subsequent comments made by Phil Mickelson about his successful efforts as the captain of the victorious 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup squad, Azinger joined John Maginnes and Jeff Rude of “The Clubhouse” to discuss, among other things, the deeper issue the PGA of America faces in building a winning U.S. Ryder Cup tradition.
In the interview, Azinger offers an extremely candid opinion on the state of the U.S. Ryder Cup process and why the team has struggled so mightily in recent events.

Azinger, of course, was among the first names mentioned as U.S. fans — and even PGA Tour players — turned their attention towards the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine National. Azinger introduced a new philosophy to the U.S. team in 2008, bringing in a “pod system” that came from the corporate world, and the results were terrific. It was the last Ryder Cup win for the U.S. and only the second since 1999.
With Rude and Maginnes, Azinger explains that while his leadership technique worked, it wasn’t part of a larger system — and that’s where the U.S. and PGA of America are lacking.
