#30DaysofPhilly: Capogiro Gelato Artisans

Previous Page: The Legion of Doom

The Philly Cheesesteak, the hoagie, the soft pretzel and the cream cheese. What do these have in common? These are all items you can stuff your face with. But how about something that doesn’t “weigh” on your conscience (and elsewhere) an hour after you eat it?

Okay, I’m not going to be your dietician here, but what I will tell you is to check out Capogiro Gelato Artisans to try their gelati and sorbetti.

Capogiro is a family-owned business that was conceived during Stephanie and John Reitano’s vacation to John’s native Italy. They then came back to their hometown of Philadelphia to open a gelateria themselves. Capogiro uses the artisan method, which is the highest of gelato making and the gelato is made from scratch in small batches each morning using local ingredients. The Reitano’s are devoted to using local hand-picked produce and milk from grass-fed, hormone-free cows, as well as the most fresh, natural and seasonal ingredients for their products.

If you’re a gelato newbie, you can stick to some of the classic flavors such as Chocolate, Pistacchio and Peanut Butter. A gelato connoisseur might live a little more and order the Nocciola Piemontese, Thai Coconut Milk or the Uva Verde. Did I mention that they’ve produced over 250 flavors!? That’s a lot of gelati and sorbetti, and I guarantee that you’ll find a flavor to fall in love with. If you don’t trust me, here’s what some of Capogiro’s customers have said:
