Tour Pro Hits Wife With Errant Approach Shot

Tyler Duncan’s second full season on the PGA Tour has seen the 29-year-old make 10 cuts and miss 10 cuts.

Currently ranked 184th in the FedEx Cup standings, a good week like the one he is having in Dallas at the AT&T Byron Nelson will be monumental in helping the Purdue University product to keep his card for the third straight season.

Opening with rounds of 64-66, Duncan is projected to move well inside the 125 number to make it into the FedEx Cup Playoffs. As important as a good week is for Duncan, he learned it’s equally as important to avoid hitting your wife with wayward approach shots.

Playing the 13th hole in Friday’s second round, Duncan found his tee shot in the fairway, but with some mud on the left side of the ball. Knowing he couldn’t miss left of the green, the natural bailout came in the form of a right miss. Unfortunately for his wife, Maria, the bounding approach hit her in the head before stopping 33 yards from the pin.

Duncan would make his only bogey of the day on that hole, but luckily his wife was okay as well.

“I had a little mud on the ball, little unfortunate timing there and shot out to the right,” Duncan told PGATour.com. “(The ball) took a big bounce and hit her, I guess. I didn’t know until after the round. … I’m just happy she’s not hurt, and I was with her a while ago.”

This isn’t the first time Maria Duncan has been struck by a wayward shot, Duncan continued.

“Not long after we started dating, she actually got hit in the head by another ball, a random ball from the driving range,” Duncan said. “She’s dodged two hits to the head. I’m sure most people can’t say that.”

Duncan will resume his third round on Sunday morning in solo third place, three shots behind Matt Every.
