Tiger Woods has shown flashes of his old self during this now-three month comeback from his latest back surgery, a fusion of his L5-S1 vertebral segment, but putting together four really solid rounds hasn’t been part of that return… yet.
This week’s Honda Classic looks to be the best example of what the newly-reconstructed Woods is made of, which apparently includes hitting the ball farther than everyone else in the field. While his fused back has restricted his ability to rotate by a few degrees, it has given him the stability in his core to let a few drives loose.
The most impressive of those drives came on the slight dogleg right 10th hole. The monster par-4 measured just shy of 500 yards on the scorecard each of the first two days of the event, but Tiger dismantled it with a 361-yard drive — the longest of anyone in the field and his longest drive on the PGA Tour since 2014 — and a sand wedge to inside 10 feet.

Tiger missed the birdie putt, but he was able to put together a 1-over par round of 71 that put him four shots back of the 36-hole co-leaders. Woods’ 71 was more than two shots better than the field average.
