Tiger Woods’ first competitive round of golf in more than 465 days had a little bit of everything — flashes of brilliance, head-shaking chip shots, dialed-in irons, loose drives and even a fist pump. When the dust settled, Woods signed for a 1-over par 73 after a disappointing double bogey-par-double bogey finish.

A promising start — 4-under par through eight holes — was sidetracked when Woods bogeyed two of the next three holes, both of which were par-5s, stalling any momentum the 14-time major winner had accrued.
From there into the house, Woods fought a case of the lefts off of the tee, hit some loose irons and scrambled his way to a few pars and a two-putt birdie on the par-5 15th hole. The tough finish dropped Woods from what would have been a tie for ninth place to second-from-last in the 18-man tournament.

The first-round lead is held by J.B. Holmes who fired an 8-under par 64 to top Hideki Matsuyama’s 65 by one and Dustin Johnson’s 66 by two. Henrik Stenson, Matt Kuchar and Louis Oosthuizen are tied for fourth, three shots back.
