Spieth Shoots Highest Score In Relation To Par Of Career

The Genesis Open looked to be a positive week for Jordan Spieth as the three-time major champion burst out of the gates in the first round, racing to a 7-under par mark that would only be bettered across the weather-interrupted round by eventual champion JB Holmes.

However, his opening 64 was his lone round in the 60s as Spieth followed up his torrid day’s work with a pair of 70s before imploding in the final round to shoot a 10-over par 81, his highest score in relation to par in his career and his second-highest total ever.

Spieth birdied the first hole of his final round, but a double bogey was lurking on the second. Another bogey on the third and par on the fourth holes took Spieth to 2-over par on the day before he made triple bogey on the par-4 5th, which included a three-putt from four feet.

Spieth added another bogey on the par-4 8th to post an outgoing 41, but that wasn’t the worst of it. Playing the short and tricky par-4 10th hole, Spieth hit his drive into the greenside bunker just 81 feet from the hole.

From there, it took him seven shots to complete the hole.

Spieth played four shots from the back bunker, eventually blasting out to 11 feet, where he missed the putt for triple bogey.

Spieth would par in after the 10th, shooting a 4-over par 40 on the back nine to post a 10-over par score to tumble to a tie for 51st place.

After picking up 2.794 strokes on the field average on the greens in the first round, Spieth lost 3.607 strokes to the field average during the final round. The putter wasn’t his only issue, either. Spieth also lost over three strokes in strokes gained: around the green as well, for a strokes gained total in the final round of -8.776.

Ranked No. 24 in the most recent Official World Golf Rankings, Spieth will be in Mexico City this week for the WGC-Mexico Championship.
