Spieth Conjures Playoff Magic, Wins Australian Open

For as much flack as Jordan Spieth has caught for having had a “down year” in 2015, the 23-year-old Texan picked up his third win of the calendar year on Sunday at the Emirates Australian Open at Royal Sydney Golf Club.

Spieth grabbed an early share of the lead before stumbling around the turn, playing holes 8-11 in 2-over par. However, rallying to the house in 3-under was enough to earn the two-time major champion a place in a three-man playoff alongside Cameron Smith and Ashley Hall.

Playing the 18th hole for the fifth time that week, Spieth rolled in a clutch birdie putt that would prove to be the winner.

The win was Spieth’s second at the Australian Open — he also won in 2014 — and his first worldwide win since May at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational. He is scheduled to be in the field in two weeks at the Hero World Challenge.
