Sergio Takes Out Frustration On His Driver

When Sergio Garcia made a historic 13 on the 15th hole at the Masters, putting five balls in the water,  he did it with uncanny composure.

Garcia was content to hit a shot, watch it roll back in the water, and then drop and hit another. In front of the world, at the Masters, he kept himself under control on the hallowed grounds of Augusta National.

That’s not what Garcia did on Friday afternoon at the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio. “Bad Sergio” was back in full form.

Playing at the course he helped design, Garcia melted down at the par-4 fifth hole. A wayward drive went left and Garcia violently tossed his driver into the woods.

Garcia, still seething but embarrassed, had to go and find the club. After approximately a minute, Garcia emerges from the wood with the driver firmly in hand. He then takes a whack at the bushes with the driver. To make matters worse, Garcia then shanked his chip shot into the gallery.

He went on to bogey the hole. Garcia finished the second round at 2-over par and missed the cut. That’s now two straight events where he didn’t make the weekend.

Former Masters champion Zach Johnson and Ryan Moore are the co-leaders at at 9-under par. First-round leader Grayson Murray is currently at 8-under, tied with Andrew Landry for third place.

Garcia was a good sport about the 13 at The Masters and then went and won a member-member event with Ben Crenshaw last week. Once back on Tour, however, Garcia couldn’t keep his professional composure.

This isn’t the first time Garcia has abused a club on the course.  Just last September, Garcia broke his putter during a round at the Dell Technologies Championship. He ended up having to putt with his fairway wood.

On Friday, Garcia used his wood as a tool of anger. Perhaps next week he can find another member-member tournament to win.
