Romo Falters on Back Nine in Tour Debut

Tony Romo’s PGA Tour debut got off to an incredible start. He was even-par through 12 holes and looked as comfortable on the course as he has on the football field and analyst booth

The thing with golf is it can unravel quickly, and it did so for Romo on Thursday at Corales Punta Cana Resort & Club Championship in the Dominican Republic. He dropped five shots from No. 13-16 and after even-par through 12 holes, finished his tour debut with a 77.

“I really hit some good shots, and I’m close,” Romo said, per the Golf Channel. “I had a chance to be under par pretty easily there for a while, and then two or three shots on the back nine cost me. But that’s golf.”

But there was plenty to get excited about for Romo, who bogeyed his first two holes with a case of nerves before righting the ship.

The the former All-Pro quarterback and CBS’ lead football color analyst had a welcoming ovation with an introduction, and included some terrific shots early on.

Romo did have some high points. After bogeying the first two holes he went on a run on Nos. 4-8, including a terrific birdie putt on the par-4 fifth hole. Romo was even-par through 12 holes and very much looking like a pro golfer.

Then, it went south on 13, and began a stretch where he dropped five shots in four holes to card a 77, currently 14 shots in back of the leader Brice Garnett. Romo is currently tied for 129th, two shots ahead of Guy Boros, who is all alone in last after a 79.

Romo isn’t the first other sport star to try his hand on the golf course. Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry shot a 76 last year in his debut at a Web.com event. Curry was interested in how Romo did according to Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle. When Kroichick told Curry the score, the NBA star smiled.

“I got him by a stroke,” Curry said.

It would take a miraculous second day for Romo to make the cutline, but he does get a chance on Friday with a 1 p.m. start.
