Reed Searching For New Team Event Partner

Patrick Reed didn’t do himself any favors last month at the Ryder Cup. Dubbed “Captain America,” Reed didn’t ingratiate himself to too many of his peers following the United States’ drubbing at the hands of Team Europe in Paris.

Making his first start since the controversial biennial matches, Reed was inevitably asked tangentially about the controversial comments he made at the expense of former-partner Jordan Spieth and U.S. captain Jim Furyk. A media member asked Reed given his falling out with Spieth who he’d like his partner to be in upcoming international matches.

“No, not really,” Reed said when asked if he was trying to make a statement in China this week. “Ryder Cup was three, almost four weeks ago. Right now I’m just trying to play great golf and finish off the year right, because even though the PGA Tour season has now started, for the European Tour, it’s still going on. I’m a little bit behind Francesco [Molinari] in that and I’m hoping to close that gap and have a chance to hopefully win The Race to Dubai.”

Pressed about who he would possibly team up with, Reed said he was more worried about making the Presidents Cup team in 2019 first of all before worrying about possible partners.

“I don’t know,” Reed said. “I don’t even know where I stand on the whole points list or anything like that. Right now I’m just kind of focusing on this week and trying to get through the season.”

Making captain Tiger Woods’ team in 14 months is completely in Reed’s hands, but who he will play with will surely be a hot topic for debate in the months that lead up to next year’s matches in Australia.
