Putting In The Dark Leads To DeChambeau’s Saturday 63

Never one to succumb to conventional methods, Bryson DeChambeau resorted to putting in the dark on Friday night in an attempt to fix the subpar putting that left him 10 shots behind 36-hole leader Matt Kuchar.

Following his second-round 67, DeChambeau headed to the Waialae Country Club putting green with his team and a lot of unusual equipment.

“I was working until 7:15, 7:20 p.m. Dark. Yeah, we had lights out there. I wasn’t going to leave until I figured it out. That’s just me. You guys know that,” DeChambeau said.

Over the first three days of the event, DeChambeau lost a total of 2.355 strokes to the field average on the greens, among the worst in the field for those who made the weekend. However, the light-challenged putting session on Friday night begat a better putting performance on Saturday as DeChambeau had his first positive strokes-gained putting round of the week.

“My face angle at impact with the putter was not on line at all,” he explained. “I mean, it was like a blackout. I had no idea where I was starting. I tried to figure it out last night, and it took me about an hour and a half before I finally recognized what it was. Took me too long to figure it out, but I did.”

It all culminated in a Saturday round of 7-under par, which rocketed the No. 5-ranked player in the world into a tie for fifth place, seven shots back of Kuchar heading into Sunday.
