Pro Gives Fan His Wedge During Round

Eddie Pepperell made waves last month at the Open Championship following an early-posting final-round 4-under par 67 while hungover. Last week, he found his name in the headlines for a much less contentious reason.

Walking up the final hole, Pepperrell sought out a fan who had been following him around all day and handed over his lob wedge after learning that his approach shot had gotten a nice bounce onto the green.

“He told me my ball hit a sprinkler on the last and kicked on and he gave me a clap for my shot,” Pepperell said. “He was the only one I heard clapping so I said, ‘Here you go, you can have my lob wedge.’”

The only downside of this story is for the fan who got the wedge.

Pepperell opened the interview after being asked about handing over the wedge by saying, “Yeah, if he’s still around, he can have the other 13.”

The Englishman would go on to par the last hole en route to a final round 1-under par 71, which put him at 12-under par for the tournament, good enough for a top-10 finish.
