Phil Leaves Hilarious Message on Glove for Fan

Phil Mickelson is as famous for his fan interactions and personality off the course as he is for his brilliance and skill on it, so it should come as no surprise that on a day when Tiger Woods dramatically made his first cut on the PGA Tour in nearly 900 days that Lefty stole a little bit of the spotlight.

Finishing up his second round on the South Course at Torrey Pines, Phil hit a wayward drive that leaked right on him and got over the spectator ropes. Being one of the biggest names in the game, Mickelson’s ball smashed into a gallery member, which commenced the age-old signed glove apology.

What cameras weren’t able to pick up clearly is what Phil wrote to the spectator. Luckily for the rest of the world, Chris Solomon of No Laying Up grabbed a picture of his television screen, flipped the image and made out Phil’s message, “Next time duck! Phil Mickelson.”

Mickelson went on to birdie the 18th hole and shoot a round of 4-under par 68, which moved him into the top-10 and five shots back of 36-hole leader Ryan Palmer.

This isn’t the first time Phil has had some fun with a person he’s hit at an event — and it surely won’t be the last no matter how forgiving the new Callaway Rogue driver is. At the 2016 Memorial Tournament, a wayward drive by Mickelson bounded off of a volunteer’s head and went all the way across the fairway into the first cut.

Phil eased the mood with an “I’m so sorry” glove and a light-hearted poke at the hardness of the marshal’s head.
