Na’s Caddie Goes Off On Fan For Cellphone Distraction

Kevin Na told the media earlier this week that there are only seven or eight courses on the PGA Tour where he realistically has a chance to win. Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, site of this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge, is most definitely one of them.

After rounds of 70-62-69, Na holds a two-shot 54-hole lead over Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau, Jim Furyk, C.T. Pan and Mackenzie Hughes, but he may have had more cushion were it not for a spectator’s cellphone going off in his backswing on the 11th hole.

Cruising right along at 2-under par for his round and 10-under par for the tournament, Na came to the par-5 11th hole looking to get another stroke on par, but left with a double-bogey that was in some ways fan-aided.

After a drive that found a fairway bunker, Na’s recovery hit the lip and only scooted 40 yards up the fairway. His third shot found the front greenside bunker. As he prepared to play the 25-yard shot, a phone went off in his backswing, resulting in a bladed shot and an animated response from Na.

Na’s response wasn’t nearly as animated as his caddie’s. Kenny Harms, who has been on Na’s bag for 11 years, approached the offending fan and let her have it.

“Yeah, there was a fan distraction let’s call it,” Na said after the round. “Kenny being Kenny, he went off on her. He was screaming at her, and he has every right to do so. [But] I felt bad for the lady.

“I was upset at first, and then I saw the lady’s face, and I was like, ‘Oh, my God. She’s going to pee in her pants.’ So I said, ‘Come on, Kenny. Let’s forget about it. Let’s just go.'”

Na was able to pick up a final birdie two holes later to post 9-under par. He tees off alongside Hughes at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday

This wasn’t the first time Na or his caddie have been outspoken at Colonial, although the most recent notable example came in the form of the duo arguing back and forth over a club selection, not anything to do with a fan.
