Mullinax Shoots Course Record, Rockets Up Valero Leaderboard

Trey Mullinax entered the third round at the Valero Texas Open at 2-under par, seven shots off the 36-hole lead and more or less an afterthought as it pertained to contenders. A solid, yet unspectacular 3-under par front nine moved him into the top-30 on the leaderboard, but his back nine, 7-under par 29 moved him directly into contention as well as the record books.

Mullinax played the last five holes in 6-under par — eagle, par, birdie, birdie, eagle — to shoot a 10-under par 62, moving him to 12-under par for the tournament and one shot back of 54-hole co-leaders Zach Johnson and Andrew Landry.

“It’s probably one of the best rounds I’ve ever had,” Mullinax said after the round. “To go out there and shoot 62 on a hard golf course is really good.

“Obviously I don’t think you ever walk onto a tee and think 62, but I thought I had some low rounds in me. I thought I was rolling the ball well and felt really good with my irons on the range this morning, so got some stuff to happen.”

Mullinax chipped in from 95 feet for his eagle on the 14th hole, then he chipped in again from 40 feet on the 16th hole for birdie. He stuffed an approach on 17 to inside six feet and then on 18 rolled in 16-footer for the course record.

After the final putt dropped, Mullinax looked at his caddie, David Flynn, and said, “I think that might be the course record.”

It was, and it was enough to land him in one of the final two pairings on Sunday.
