Kuchar Has Hole-In-One Magic; Reed Nails 40-footer To Beat Spieth

Matt Kuchar didn’t give Ross Fischer much of a chance in their WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play contest on Friday.

Kuchar won the match 6-and-4, and it was his shot on No. 7 that punctuated his round.  Kuchar delivered an ace on No. 7 en route to his third straight win in match play on Friday. Kuchar advances to the Round of 16 on Saturday.

Perhaps the best part of the hole-in-one for Kuchar happened after the fact when he signed his ball for a lucky 12-year-old boy.

While Kuchar soared, Rory McIlroy faded and plans to head to Augusta National after being eliminated on the third day with a 5-and-3 loss to American Brian Harman. McIlroy finished third in his group and was eliminated from the tournament.

“Obviously I tried to play as good as I could. And to end with a bit of pride,” McIlroy said after the match. “I left myself behind the 8-ball after losing that first match and scraped it back a little bit. Brian played great today. He made a few birdies and didn’t really make a mistake.”

McIlroy arrived at the WGC off a win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but could only muster up 1.0 point in three matches.  He will now prepare for the Masters tournament and had plans of heading there to get a preparation round in to clear his head.

While McIlroy faltered, Patrick Reed was able to outduel good friend Jordan Spieth to advance to the Round of 16. Reed clinched the match with a long 40-foot birdie putt on No. 17 to win 2-and 1.

Other notable winners on Friday include Justin Thomas and Sergio Garcia.
