Mitchell Begins OHL Mayakoba Classic With Ace

Rounds of golf can start many different ways, but usually, it’s a blend of trying not to injure yourself after showing up way too close to your tee time and trying to make a score that won’t derail your round after one hole.

On the PGA Tour, the latter may be of some concern to the players, but beings that this is their job we’re talking about, they rarely show up only minutes before hitting their first shot in competition. As a result of this fact, and on the rare occasion that a par-3 opens the golfer’s day, the opportunity for an even rarer happening takes place as it did on Thursday at the OHL Mayakoba Classic.

Playing the par-3 10th hole as his first hole of the day and the tournament, PGA Tour rookie Keith Mitchell jarred his tee shot on the 200-yard hole. GolfChannel.com’s Will Gray had more

It’s tough to top the manner in which Keith Mitchell started the OHL Classic at Mayakoba.

Beginning on the par-3 10th hole, Mitchell holed a 6-iron from 200 yards for an ace with his very first shot of the week.

Per the PGA Tour, it’s just the fourth ace to start a round since 2002 and the second to start an opening round, joining Thomas Aiken who pulled off the feat on the same hole back in 2015.

Mitchell went on to birdie the next hole and only had one par over his first six holes on El Camaleon. Thanks to three birdies over his final six holes, he carded a 5-under 66 to join a share of third place early in the opening round, one shot behind Rickie Fowler and four shots behind leader Patton Kizzire.
