Spieth Pulls Off Near-Impossible Birdie with Chip In

Jordan Spieth is no stranger to pulling off the unlikely, but what he did on the fifth hole at Riviera Country Club on Thursday has to rank right up there with some of the best escape jobs of his life.

After getting off to an average start to the Genesis Open, Spieth bombed his drive too far on the par-4 5th hole and found himself in one of George C. Thomas’ famous barrancas. Playing as the fifth-hardest hole on the course during the first round, Spieth did what he typically does: make us shake our heads in amazement.

Spieth was able to advance his second shot 153 yards to just right of the green. Still not out of the woods, or more accurately, the rough, the three-time major champion elicited memories of his clutch hole outs from the John Deere Classic or Travelers Championship.

The unlikely birdie took Spieth to red numbers for the day. He would finish his round at even par, which puts him in a tie for 36th place heading into the second round, five strokes behind first-round co-leaders Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau.
