Jim Furyk Shoots The Lowest Round In PGA Tour History

Golf has a new magic number thanks to Jim Furyk, or as he’s now known, Mr. 58.

The 46-year-old Furyk went out in 8-under par 27 (!) that included just two pars, six birdies and a hole-out eagle. He kept the momentum going on the back nine, birdieing his first three holes to reach 11-under through 12 holes. TPC River Highlands being a par-70, through those first 12 holes, all Furyk had to do was par in to break 60. He did one better, rolling in a 23-footer for birdie on the par-3 16th to reach 12 under.

Furyk was the last player on the PGA Tour to shoot sub-60 thanks to the 59 he posted in the third round of the 2013 BMW Championship. He can get rid of those momentos now.

Here are some of the craziest stats Furyk racked up en route to the best score in Tour history, according to GolfDigest.com.

There have been approximately 613,000 rounds in PGA Tour history, and Furyk’s is the lowest ever.

Firing on all cylinders: Furyk hit all 18 greens in regulation, carded 10 birdies and one eagle and needed just 24 putts.

This was the ninth time Furyk hit all 18 greens in regulation.

After his 2-over round of 72 on Saturday, Furyk said caddie Mike “Fluff” Cowan sent pictures of Furyk’s swing to his father and swing coach, Mike Furyk. Furyk said that’s the FIRST time he has ever done that.

The only thing that would have made Furyk’s Sunday better was walking off with a trophy. Instead, 16 shots back of 54-hole leader Daniel Berger to start the day, Furyk had to settle for a tie for fifth place.

The victory went to Russell Knox, thanks to a 2-under par 68 that saw him stay strong while others near the end buckled. The Travelers was the Scotsman’s second win on the PGA Tour this season and almost assuredly gains him passage to Hazeltine next month as a member of the European Ryder Cup Team.
