Ian Poulter Wrongly Told He Made Masters

Ian Poulter thought he had a Masters start in hand on Saturday after he defeated Louis Oosthuizen to advance to the quarterfinals of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play championship on Saturday.

Poulter was told by the media that by making the quarterfinals he would have had enough points to crack the top-50 in the world rankings and earn a bid. Poulter then found out that wasn’t the case 10 minutes before he was set to play Kevin Kinser in the quarterfinals.

Just before the quarterfinal match was set to tee off, Poulter was informed of the error via text message. In order to obtain enough world ranking points, Poulter had to actually reach the semifinals of the Match Play to qualify.

He came up short, losing to Kisner 8 and 6, and then blew off some steam, per the Golf Channel.

“I should never listen to other people,” Poulter said after his quarterfinals loss. “When you finish a round of golf and the press and everybody is telling you you’re in the Masters, and then you get a text message 10 minutes before you tee off to correct everybody, to say, ‘Oh, we’ve made a mistake, actually, no, that was wrong, you’re not in. You need to go and win.’

“Not that that’s an excuse in any form or factor, it’s a little disappointing.”

Poulter now has only one avenue into the Masters: win at the Houston Open this week. Poulter said that he hasn’t made a decision on whether to enter the event for one last chance.
