Charl Schwartzel, the winner of the 2011 Masters, announced over the weekend that he would be missing the remainder of the 2018-19 PGA Tour season as he attempts to recover from a lingering wrist injury.
Schwartzel has slipped outside the top-100 in the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time since 2008 as a result of the injury.
“I’ve been forced, due to my wrist injury, to take the remainder of the season off to give my wrist time to rest and heal!” Schwartzel wrote on Twitter on Saturday night. “It’s very frustrating but with a long career still ahead of me, I will get this fixed and I look forward to the comeback.”

Aside from the Masters, Schwartzel also won the 2016 Valspar Championship on the PGA Tour as well as 11 times on the European Tour.
Schwartzel has made just four of 13 cuts this season, with his most recent weekend of competitive golf being played at the Corales Punta Cana Resort & Club Championship in March. His last start was in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans where he and fellow countryman Louis Oosthuizen missed the cut.
He is 171st in the FedEx Cup rankings and will likely return next year to the Tour equipped with a medical exemption that will allow him to attempt to retain his full status.
