Cantlay Shows Off Pebble Beach’s Penal Rough

There’s still a week’s worth of growing left to be done at Pebble Beach Golf Links ahead of the 2019 U.S. Open, but the course looks to be pretty well ready for the best players in the world.

Hosting America’s national championship for the sixth time, Pebble Beach has become one of the shorter major championship venues, but the rough at the famous seaside course appears to be up and ready to act as the course’s primary defense.

Tiger Says U.S. Open Setups Have Gotten Worse

Fresh off of his Memorial Tournament victory, Patrick Cantlay headed straight to California to prep for the year’s third major championship. What he found on the Monterey Peninsula was windy course that didn’t allow for wayward shots.

Standing on the ninth green, Cantlay took seven paces from a traditional right pin position and found rough that swallowed his golf shoes. Not only did the rough make it very difficult to play a shot, but Cantlay had issues even finding the golf ball to do so.

At just over 7,000 yards, the pros and amateurs competing will have to put an added emphasis on accuracy, something that is right up Tiger Woods’ alley.

“I just like it when there’s high rough and narrow fairways, and go get it, boys,” Woods said last week at the Memorial Tournament

Woods will play his first two rounds of the U.S. Open alongside Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose, while Cantlay will play with Paul Casey and Lucas Glover.
