In the midst of a typical NFL Sunday and the MLB’s National League Championship Series, the PGA Tour’s 2016-17 season-opener, the Safeway Open, may have provided one of the best finishes of the sporting day. Brendan Steele came from four strokes back at the start of the day to win his first PGA Tour event in his last 141 starts — he won previously at the 2011 Texas Valero Open.
Steele closed in on 54-hole leader Patton Kizzire with an outgoing 4-under par 32 and surpassed him down the stretch thanks to three birdies in his last three holes.

Kizzire, two holes behind Steele, could only muster pars on the last six holes, falling one stroke short. Paul Casey, Michael Kim and Scott Piercy finished in a three-way tie for third. Phil Mickelson and Justin Thomas also carded top-10 finishes, tying for eighth place four shots back of the winner.
