Walker Outduels Day Down The Stretch For PGA Title

Jimmy Walker and Jason Day salvaged what was shaping up to be the most boring major championship of 2016 on Sunday, going shot-for-shot on the back nine, ultimately ending with Walker holding up the Wanamaker Trophy after a clutch recovery on the 18th hole.

Walker held at least a piece of lead following the completion of every round, making 2016 four-for-four in first-time major winners. The win was Walker’s first since the Valero Texas Open last March. He had missed the cut at the previous two major championships and had slipped from as high as No. 10 in the Official World Golf Rankings down to 48th. He’s back up to 15th with the win.

For Day, it ends a solid, yet disappointing major season that didn’t see the world’s top-ranked player claim one of golf’s four biggest trophies. The runner-up finish did increase his strangle-hold on the No. 1 spot, however, putting him nearly 3 average points ahead of Dustin Johnson.

The countdown to the next major championship begins. Only 247 more days until the 2017 Masters.

Here is the complete leaderboard for the 2016 PGA Championship.
