The Odds: McIlroy Heavy Favorite Win Masters In 2015

Rory McIlroy has staked his claim among the golf elite, winning the 2014 PGA Championship — the fourth major title of his career and second of the season. McIlroy said after his victory at Valhalla that he covets completing the career grand slam, and he’s the clear favorite to do just that next April. The LVH SuperBook opened the Northern Irishman at 5-to-1 odds to win the green jacket at next year’s Masters.

“I want to go to Augusta next year trying to win five and trying to win the career grand slam,” McIlroy said. “I’ve refocused and I’ve rededicated myself and this is important to me. This is my career and I want to make the most of it.”

The world’s No. 1 golfer is the only name on the LVH board seeing odds in the single digits for next season’s Masters, and he’s followed by a familiar name who’s mired in a slump.

Tiger Woods, listed at 12-to-1 to win the 2015 Masters, continues to be hampered by a back injury that has severely limited his abilities on the course. He was forced to withdraw from the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational due to his sacrum — a bone located at the bottom of the spine — being jarred loose. He insisted that he felt good after having the bone being put back in place and receiving treatment. But he followed that withdrawal by missing the cut at the PGA Championship.

If an extended period of rest and rehab gets Woods back on track, his price could be trimmed, but until then it’s tough to know what you’re going to get from him.

Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson both check in at 15-to-1, while the quartet of Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth and Bubba Watson — the 2014 Masters winner — each own 20-to-1 odds.

Fowler appears ready to break through. He has just one career PGA Tour win on his resume, but with his second place finish at Valhalla, he became the third player in history to finish in the top five at all four majors in a single year — Woods and Jack Nicklaus are the other two.
