Rory McIlroy let things get a little too close for comfort in the final round of the British Open, but he was able to hold off Sergio Garcia to close out a dominant performance at the Royal Liverpool.
Following his impressive showing, the LVH SuperBook opened McIlroy as the clear 7-to-1 favorite for next month’s PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
We’re sure he’s happy about his son’s status as the favorite heading into the season’s fourth and final major, but forgive Gerry McIlroy, Rory’s dads, if he scoffs at making a wager at that price. After all, Gerry and three friends reportedly placed a combined 400 pounds (now $680) in 2004 on McIlroy, at 500-to-1 odds, to win the British Open before he turned 26. McIlroy was 15 at the time of the wager and is now 25. The winning ticket should pay 200,000 pounds ($340,000).
McIlroy is followed on the LVH’s board for the PGA by Adam Scott at 12-to-1 and Tiger Woods, who struggled at the Open in his second taste of action following back surgery, at 15-to-1. Woods started the Open well, shooting a first-round 69, but followed that with rounds of 77, 73 and 75.
Here are the SuperBook’s opening prices for the PGA Championship, scheduled for Aug. 7-10.
