Last month, we labeled Ray Allen as the best golfer in the NBA. Well, for one weekend at least, we have a new leader.
Stephen Curry tied for fourth Sunday at the American Century Championship, the annual celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe. He actually sat atop the leaderboard after the second round Saturday, but posted a 3-over-par 75 on Sunday to fall back. Former NFL quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver won for the fourth time at Tahoe.
Allen, meanwhile, finished 37th. His 7-over 79 on Sunday was the best of his three rounds.
Of course, Allen had just barely a month to “train” for the ACC, considering he was knocking down crucial 3-pointers to help the Miami Heat win the NBA title in late June. Curry and his Golden State Warriors were eliminated from the playoffs in the middle of May, so he had a bit more time to hit up the links.
Yet, this begs the question: What do we have to do to set up some match play between Curry and Allen? Each picks an NBA teammate to caddie — David Lee’s not a bad golfer, and neither is Shane Battier. Should Curry and Allen tie, the “playoff” would be a 3-point contest. Which charity wants to make this happen?
As for other current athletes at the ACC, a trio of NFL players placed between Curry and Allen. Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould finished tied for 15th, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers tied for 22nd, and Kansas City Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop tied for 25th.
Michael Phelps, the Hank Haney project, finished second-to-last in 84th, ahead of only Larry the Cable Guy.
