We’ve all been there. You’re waiting on the tee — on almost every hole — and that slow-poke in front of you just won’t let your group play through.
For years, we’ve heard and seen all of the ideas on how to speed up the game.
From 13-hole courses and play-nine initiatives to speed golf, time clocks and easier courses, the list of ideas and the growing number of voices chiming in on how to improve pace of play across the game is seemingly never-ending.
Maybe Rory McIlroy can help.
This weekend, the world’s No. 1 golfer offered his thoughts on what the game needs.
Rory thinks the game has a need for speed.
Speaking to BBC Radio, the four-time major winner said:
“Everything’s so instant now and everyone doesn’t have as much time as they used to. So you maybe try some way of speeding the game up.”
This isn’t necessarily something we haven’t heard yet, but Rory thinks the times are a-changing and the sports’s leaders are ready for new ideas.
“I don’t think they’d be against it, especially if they wanted to get participation levels up. I don’t think they need to alter tournament-play formats, I think that works very well. It’s the grass roots … definitely not at our level.”
Improving pace of play, of course, has been a major goal of the United States Golf Associations. Just last month, Hunki Yun, the USGA’s Director of Special Projects, visited with Back9Network to discuss the steps being taken by the association:
