The 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah will go down as one of the most historic in the event’s history as a huge Sunday comeback by the Europeans capped off the team’s second straight victory. Luke Donald helped lead the charge on Sunday, sealing the first of 8 1/2 points that day with a win over Bubba Watson.
Prior to assisting his team in retaining the cup, however, Donald used one of his lesser-known talents to create something that will forever capture the magic at Medinah: a giant golf ball painted by Donald himself.
The ball is covered in European blue with the iconic yellow stars over the skyline of Chicago — the location of the Ryder Cup that year. Each member of the team signed the ball, as well, which includes Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia, and Graeme McDowell.
The ball is three feet in diameter, weighs 200 pounds, and the entire piece — base included — stands six feet tall.
Donald, who lives in Chicago, graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in art theory and practice. After learning that little tidbit, it’s easy to see why this ball is so incredible.
Ryan and Bob from Back9Network’s “Golf Treasures” found this fantastic piece of artwork in Phoenix, Ariz., and it piqued their interest as a centerpiece for their auction.
