Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley were a lock to play with each other, considering their remarkable run at the 2012 Ryder Cup. The 46-year-old Steve Stricker and 20-year-old Jordan Spieth were an expected duo, matching the oldest American with the youngest to steady him out.

The rest of the Presidents Cup pairings for Thursday’s fourball matches were a bit up in the air. But team captains Fred Couples (U.S.) and Nick Price (internationals) cleared the air Wednesday afternoon by announcing their lineups.
Price went first with Canadian Graham DeLaet and Jason Day, to which Couples responded with Brandt Snedeker and Hunter Mahan. Then Couples threw out Webb Simpson and Bill Haas, whom Price wanted his best player, Australian Adam Scott, and youngest player, Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama (21), to take on.
The third match will pit Mickelson and Bradley against South Africans Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel. Fourth is Stricker and Spieth versus South African Ernie Els and Zimbabwean Brendon de Jonge.
World No. 1 Tiger Woods is paired with Matt Kuchar for the Americans in the fifth match, and they’ll take on Argentina’s Angel Cabrera and Australian Marc Leishman. The final fourball match will see Americans Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson battle South Africans Branden Grace and Richard Sterne.
