With just one more event to be played in the FedExCup playoffs, Sunday’s final round at the BMW Championship was of ultra-importance to those hovering around the cut line and those near the top of the standings.
Following Billy Horschel’s impressive rebound victory at Cherry Hills, here’s a glimpse at the biggest FedExCup points movers heading into next week’s Tour Championship:
Billy Horschel
It pays to win. And, in winning, Horschel may have set himself up to be paid quite a bit more. Horschel, who played well at last week’s Deutsche Bank Championship before faltering on the 72nd hole, erased those demons this week in Denver. He jumped 18 spots with the victory and is now second in FedExCup points with only the Tour Championship sitting between him and a cool $10 million.
Sergio Garcia
While he coughed up a third-round lead, Garcia’s overall effort at the BMW Championship improved his FedExCup chances in a big way. He slid 10 in the right direction to No. 13 thanks to his T-4.
Patrick Reed
The soon-to-be first-time Ryder Cupper slid six spots but did so in the wrong direction. Reed tied for 53rd this week at Cherry Hills and fell to 18th. Since the playoffs began, Reed has dropped from his No. 9 position.
Bubba Watson
I wouldn’t call Bubba’s movement huge, but he moved in the right direction — sliding up three spots — with his runner-up finish at the BMW. Knowing the talent he possesses and penchant for getting it done under pressure, perhaps Bubba can keep the fire burning on perhaps his best season yet.
Morgan Hoffman
The news Saturday followed Hoffmann as the golf world followed his attempt at 59. He turned in another solid performance Sunday and bounced 47 spots in the right direction to No. 21 after a third-place finish.
Ryan Palmer
After his T-4 at the BMW, Palmer is now inside the top 25. He started the week outside of the top 30 and jumped 14 spots to move forward in the FedExCup.
Stuart Appleby
Appleby finished right where he didn’t want to — 31st in FedExCup points. He was T-46 at the BMW and fell another five spots, ending his season. It was a solid postseason for Appleby, who climbed towards the top 30 after starting at No. 98.
Keegan Bradley
Citing a potential rules violation in Thursday’s round, Bradley withdrew from the BMW on Saturday morning. In doing so, he effectively removed himself from any chance of moving on in the playoffs. He ended up finishing 33rd in the standings thanks to the withdrawal.
