Following a 4-under-par 68 on Tuesday to take a share of the lead, the niece of PGA Tour legend Tiger Woods struggled to a 1-over 73 on Wednesday. But she went low again Thursday, carding a 3-under 69 to move into a tie for fifth place, and she jumped up to second with another 69 on Friday. Her 3-under 279 trailed only Laura Gonzalez Escallon.

“This meant a lot to me,” Woods said. “Last year I failed to even make the two-day cut in first stage. So to finish in second place this year showed me how much I’ve progressed this past year. I’m really looking forward to continuing this progression into Stage 2 next month!”

The top 100 players from Rancho Mirage moved on to the second stage of Q-School, which will be held Oct. 8-11 at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla.
