Less than 48 hours ago, Justin Rose became the newest U.S. Open Champion by surviving Merion Golf Club to capture his first career major. Rose returns to action this week at the Travelers Championship without taking any time to rest and enjoy his triumph.
Those bills aren’t going to pay themselves, eh Rosie?
The Englishman will undoubtedly be the most confident player in the field this week at the Hartford event; however the Travelers has become somewhat of a proving ground for first-time winners over the past few years.
Defending champion Marc Leishman is the latest example of that trend, breaking his PGA Tour victory cherry last year in impressive style. Furthermore, 2013 has been the “Year of the First Timer” as nine (!) players have broken through to the winner’s circle so far this year. I can’t remember a PGA Tour season in recent years that even comes close to that number.
Regardless of his success last week at Merion, Rose will have to be firing on all cylinders in Hartford if he hopes to have another strong showing in consecutive weeks. If he can do so, Rose will join the likes of Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar as the only players who have won multiple tournaments this season.
