The game of golf provides many lessons for its players — whether young or old. Honesty, integrity and determination are just a few of the traits every good golfer possesses.
And they’re key to the message put forth by Robert Loran Floyd in his book “Sam and his Dad.”
Floyd, the son of World Golf Hall of Famer Raymond Floyd, tells the story of young Sam, who enjoys his Saturday rounds with his father. Sam, who’s also one of the smallest boys in his school, is still learning the game and wants more than anything to make his first par.
The story, told in rhyme, explains how Sam — following his father’s advice to “never lie” — makes a bogey on a hole he nearly made his first par on after accidentally moving the ball with his club. He’s upset but Sam’s father is more than proud. On his last hole of the day, though, Sam is in for a surprise.
Without spoiling the ending, Sam’s honesty, integrity and determination are rewarded — many times over.
There’s no shortage of books geared towards golfers. From instruction to photography, golf history and beyond, literature is aplenty for golf fans. Now, those with children looking for golf books have an option that teaches while also entertaining.
