Golfers Receive Jail Time For Attacking Fellow Players

A pair of Oregon golfers have been sentenced to between 30 and 45 days behind bars for attacking fellow golfers on the Rose City Golf Course in Portland last May.

Matthew Leo and Jacob Self were playing in the wrong direction, according to a probable cause affidavit and reported by OregonLive.com, when they came upon Henning and Roland Larsen, who informed them of their mistake.

The Larsens continued their round only to encounter Leo and Self a few holes later still playing in the wrong direction, and that’s when Leo and Self attacked the Larsens with their clubs, causing welts and lacerations as well as broken fingers.

Leo was the first one to swing his club, aiming for Roland Larsen’s head, according to the affidavit, but Larsen was able to protect himself by putting up his forearms. The force of Leo’s swing and the subsequent blocking by Larsen was enough to dislodge the clubhead from the shaft.

Self followed suit, hitting Henning Larsen across the back with enough force to bend the club.

Both Leo and Self were heavily intoxicated, according to Deputy District Attorney Nicole Hermann. The Larsens, with the help of a third man, were able to restrain Leo and Self until police arrived.

Leo, who admitted to not remembering the confrontation,  was sentenced in September to 45 days in jail and three years of probation. He also has to pay $642 in restitution. Self was sentenced earlier this week to 30 days in jail and two years of probation. He has to pay $1,921 in restitution.
