Back in the 1960s and 70s, when he battled Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus for golf supremacy, Gary Player earned the nickname “Mr. Fitness.” The moniker was born obviously from Player’s muscular frame, but also because his hit-the-gym habits were not widely shared.
It’s no surprise, then, that some 40 years later Player became the oldest athlete to pose for ESPN The Magazine’s “Body Issue.” Photos of the 77-year-old nine-time major winner, and others, were released Tuesday. (All photos courtesy of ESPN)
Judging by many of the physiques seen today on courses around the world, we know golf alone didn’t give Player that figure. So kudos to the South African, who says on his website, “I know that the gym is the key to my quality of life and ability to continue playing the game that is so enjoyable for me.”
Golf’s other representative in the issue is Carly Booth, a 21-year-old from Scotland.
An elite player since age 11, Booth competes on the Ladies European Tour, on which she owns two career wins. As a child, she also dabbled in gymnastics.
More athletes can be seen here. Enjoy.
