Tech Talk: Improve Your Game with the Golf MTRx App

Golf smartphone apps have flooded the market over the last two years, all promising to improve your game and lower your scores. While many apps are focused on offering golfer’s tips and drills to practice on the range, others calculate descriptive statistics of your golf swing in real time. The new Golf MTRx app by ZeroLine Golf for iOS devices offers the most detailed analysis of your swing that I’ve seen to date.

First and foremost, the app is unlike others that record swing analytics in that there is no hardware required to make it work. As long as you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, you can use this app with relative ease. You don’t even have to attach a clip to your golf club.

As you can see in the video above, golfers simply need to tuck their iOS device into the belt line of their golf slacks. By way of your device’s internal accelerometer, the Golf MTRx app can “magically” spit out hundreds of data points including hip speed, golf swing speeds, swing tempo and many others.

While testing the Golf MTRx during a recent practice session, I will admit that I was skeptical. How was this app going to tell me how to improve my golf swing if it has no contact with my golf club?

As the company website explains in detail, engineers of the app worked diligently to answer this question. As it turns out, your iOS device is an extremely high-tech little device that can record sounds, motions and other golf swing elements to provide incredibly accurate data. I was rather impressed, to say the least.

I am a bit uneasy, however, to fully trust the app’s improvement suggestions when it has no way of telling where my golf ball landed. While a slower hip speed may normally equate to a shorter shot, for example, I may have still made a good swing overall.
