TaylorMade RSi Irons: Fighting Mishits 1 Shot At a Time

TaylorMade is here with an important message. The golf club manufacturer wants us to know that mishits happen. They’re just a fact of life for us golfers. They happen for you. They happen for me. They even happen to PGA Tour stars.

Fortunately, TaylorMade came up with a solution it thinks may work for golfers of all skill levels: the new RSi Irons.

Built with new — and rather unique — Face Slot Technology, the RSi irons are said to guard against the much-maligned mishit that a study run by the company revealed plagues 76 percent of all iron shots. The study reported that more than three quarters of all iron shots are struck outside of the center of the face. Missing that way, of course, reduces ball speed and thus results in less distance and inconsistency.

“Face Slot Technology provides greater consistency across the face, giving players improved performance on mishits,” said Tomo Bystedt, TaylorMade’s Director of Product Creation for Irons, Putters & Wedges. “No golfer is perfect, not even the best players in the world hit the center of the club every time. So with RSi, we’re giving all golfers a technology that can help their mishits perform more like pure strikes.”

The line includes RSi 1, RSi 2 and the RSi TP.

For golfers familiar with the TaylorMade line, the RSi series introduces big changes. For 2015, the RSi 1 replaces the SpeedBlade irons, the RSi 2 replaces the SLDR irons and the RSi TP replaces the Tour Preferred MC.

The RSi 1 irons feature the brand’s “Advanced Face Design,” which incorporates TaylorMade’s thinnest face yet and Inverted Cone Technology to help improve ball speed off the face. With the biggest sweet spot TaylorMade has put into an iron, the RSi 1 irons are game-improvement irons.

The RSi 2 feature a Progressive Multi-Material Construction with the low irons (3-5 irons) featuring tungsten weighting to help with a higher ball flight, the mid irons (6-7) made a bit thinner to allow for the series’ Face Slot Technology, and the short irons (8-PW) forged to aide in feel and accuracy.

The RSi TP irons are geared towards the skilled golfer and use an advanced two-piece construction to provide the feel and precision required by low-handicap golfers.

Now, what about the Face Slot Technology? Glad you asked. The new technology that TaylorMade says sets its new irons apart is seen in two vertical scores in the face of the irons — set in the toe and heel. The slots cut through the face and are filled with a durable compound and ultimately allow the face to flex easily and generate the speed needed to keep you consistent — regardless of if you hit it well, or not.

The new Face Slot Technology, of course, was spawned from TaylorMade’s “Speed Pocket” technology introduced to the market in 2012. All of the knowledge gained from the Speed Pocket-inspired clubs was applied to RSi series. The speed pocket in this new series is also improved by way of the new ThruSlot technology, which works to activate the low area of the face at impact. When combined, Face Slot and ThruSlot technology give RSi a larger sweetspot with forgiveness near the toe, heel and bottom of the club.

Both RSi 1 ($799 steel; $899 graphite) and RSi 2 ($999 steel; $1199 graphite) will be available beginning Nov. 14 while the RSi TP ($1199) will be available Jan. 15, 2015.
