Imagine what a set of irons developed in part by Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods would look like. Now stop imagining because they’re real. And extremely limited.
Nike teased golf fans when they showed off a prototype 2-iron that was used at the Open Championship, making us wonder if we could ever get our hands on one.
On Wednesday, that dream became a reality (for a few) when they announced the release of the MM Proto irons.
Nike will be releasing just 40 sets of MM Proto irons to the public for $1,500, making them available on its website at 10 a.m. EDT on August 4. Each iron is engraved with “The Oven” and individual numbering to show which set you received.
In addition to receiving the customizable clubs you’ll get one-on-one concierge service with a Nike Golf club expert.
McIlroy and Woods helped design the irons, because why wouldn’t you have two of the best golfers on the planet design your clubs? McIlroy used that 2-iron to his advantage en route to his Open Championship victory, so the clubs must be great, right?
Thorbjorn Olesen is also playing the new irons, as he posted a picture of them on Instagram yesterday.
Here’s a closer look at the clubs, courtesy of Nike Golf:
I must say, $1,500 for a set of irons that you’ve never hit before is a little bit of a gamble. If you don’t like them, though, I’m sure they’ll do fine on the secondary market.
If you do plan on buying a set, I highly recommend setting the loudest reminder possible. Because these things will sell out FAST. And if you’re a southpaw living outside of the U.S., I’m sorry to say you’re out of luck. They’re all right-handed sets and only available to U.S. residents.
So memorize that credit card number and find the fastest computer there is, because you’re gonna need it.
