Nike Golf had itself a day Thursday with the official release of two new drivers, the Vapor Flex and Speed models, which complete the brand’s new Vapor line, and the unveiling of the Vapor hybrids.
First seen several weeks ago and, of course, then in the hands of Rory McIlroy at the Ryder Cup, the Vapor Pro was the first unveiled in the line, which is a radical change from its predecessor, the Covert — both in looks and function.
The goal behind the line is to provide a driver for every swing speed. Each driver in the line features Nike’s FlyBeams technology, which stiffen the back cavity of the club, a new Compression Channel that acts like a spring upon impact, and FlexLoft 2, which allows for a total of 15 different settings customized to your swing.
The Vapor Flex is the brand’s “pinnacle driver.” In addition to the three characteristics seen across the line, the Flex features a unique FlexFlight adjustability system. FlexFlight consistes of a RZN tube with a high-density weight (FlightPod) in the cavity of the club. Golfers can move the center of gravity to further customize their launch conditions — including angle, spin rate, forgiveness and workability.

“Often times in the fitting process, there’s an opportunity for a final adjustment to develop the shot shape and ball flight the athlete is looking for,” said Nate Radcliffe, Director of Engineering for Nike Golf. “That’s how FlexFlight can help. With a simple quarter turn, we can adjust the mass of the FlexFlight module forward and backward within the club to change the trajectory and shot shape for the athlete.”
The Vapor Speed driver features a new chassis that Nike is calling its most stable. When combined with the other features across the Vapor line, the Speed promotes a higher launch angle and lower spin, which of course lead towards more and more distance.
The Vapor Pro, of course, was added to McIlroy’s bag for the Ryder Cup.
“The first thing I noticed when I hit this driver was how hot it was,” said McIlroy said in a Nike release. “Then, I found that I could really control the flight and work it both ways on the golf course. I saw added ball speed on the monitor and am getting 10-15 yards more distance on the golf course this week.”
The Vapor hybrids follow Monday’s release of the Vapor fairway woods. Like the line’s other metalwoods, the Vapor hybrids feature the Compression Channel, FlexLoft 2 and FlyBeam Technology to get the ball up and out quickly for you regardless of the lie.
Each of the Nike Golf Vapor metalwoods will be available Jan. 30, 2015.
