They say slow and steady wins the race, which is a mantra Matt Kuchar followed last week to capture the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. Let’s take a closer look at what Matt used in his golf bag and donned in the desert last week.
Tools of the Trade
Kuchar is a long-time Bridgestone staff player and uses the new J40 430 driver with 9.5 degrees of loft and an Accra M4+ 55 shaft. He also swings the Bridgestone J40 Cavity Back iron series (5-PW) with Aerotech SteelFiber i95 Constant Weight S-flex shafts. His 4-iron is made by Fourteen Golf and features the same Aerotech SteelFiber shaft. Kuchar rounds out his Bridgestone club specs with two J40 wedges (52- and 56-degrees, bent to 57) with True Temper Dynamic Golf S400 steel shafts. His 62-degree Titleist Vokey SM4 also features the same True Temper shaft. Finally, Kuchar also plays the Bridgestone Tour B330-S golf ball.
For his fairway metals, Kuchar uses a PING Anser 14.5-degree 3-wood with a Mitsubishi Diamana Blueboard 73X shaft and an Anser 20-degree hybrid with a Fujikara Motore Speeder HB 90X shaft.
Kuchar trusts his custom-made Bettinardi Signature Model 1 putter, complete with a 44.75-inch shaft which he rests on his left forearm.
The Look
The frosty weather players experienced at the WGC-Accenture Match Play at the Golf Club at Dove Mountain in Arizona put the apparel emphasis on layering, with beanies, mitts, and merino wool sweaters prominently on display. Match play winner Matt Kuchar provided a perfect illustration of how to dress for golf in lower temperatures, going tone on tone, layering a navy golf shirt between a sky blue merino sweater and performance base layer.
Kuchar has worn Peter Millar in the past, but with his outerwear bearing the the marks of his corporate sponsors — save for a clothing manufacturer — and with an unknown feathery white logo embroidered on to his left collar, official word on his clothing supplier remains a mystery.
Kuchar has been known for trouser-length and color-matching issues in the past, but this week saw no such evidence of either. For Kuchar, keeping colors simple is key. With trimmer looking trousers just kissing the top of his ECCO Biom Hybrid shoes, Kuchar accessorized with belts from House of Fleming and socks from Kentwool to look consistently well put together all week long.
Here’s hoping the trend of winning and looking smart continues for the likable Georgia native in 2013.
