PGA Tour pro Matt Kuchar won his first WGC title at the WGC-Accenture Match Play in February. As we described in his Look of a Champion piece, Kuchar trusted his Bridgestone J40 Cavity Back irons during his impressive run. Let’s take a closer look at those irons.
Originally released in 2012, the J40 irons have the look of a forged iron but the feel of a true cavity back. The clubheads are simple and sleek, comprised of black lettering on a solid steel surface that is pleasing to the eye and provides a “professional” appearance. At address, the clubheads look more like blades than cavity backs, trending more towards a smaller profile and a sharp topline.
What impressed me the most about the J40 irons was the solid feel at impact. The ball feels like it is absorbed by the soft clubface just before exploding out toward your target. The club’s 1020 forged carbon steel head promotes forgiving feedback regardless of where you make contact with the ball. When hit pure, the J40 gave me at least five more yards when compared to my current clubs.
The irons also come equipped with Project X flighted shafts that have a low kickpoint to help you get your golf ball airborne. I noticed my ball flight off these irons was a bit higher than I am used to, which I attribute to the shafts.
Bridgestone’s J40 clubs will benefit professionals to mid-handicappers the most do the smaller clubhead size and cavity back technology.
