Merion Golf Club is a unique golf course in many ways, but none more evident than its trademark wicker basket “flagsticks”. Players and caddies will likely struggle with judging the wind throughout the championship as a result of there being no flags on any green, adding to the course’s charisma.

Believe it or not, wicker baskets are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to crazy and unique course features around the world. Here are a few more examples that could give Merion a run for its money.

Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course – Idaho

CoeurdAleneResort

You think the island green at TPC Sawgrass is a tough shot? At least that sucker is connected to the rest of the course. The green on hole no.14 at Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course is literally floating in a lake. Forget about where to leave your golf cart; you have to take a boat to this green.

Brickyard Crossing Golf Resort – Indiana

 BrickyardCrossing

When it comes to sports, Indianapolis is typically known for two things: race cars and the Indianapolis Colts. Even so, architects of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the nearby Brickyard Crossing Golf Resort found a way to merge the worlds of golf and racing by placing four golf holes within the confines of the race track.

Prison View Golf Course – Louisiana

LouisianaState

Nothing screams “golf chivalry” like a golf course built by prison inmates. Prison View Golf Course is a nine-hole track is home to the Louisiana State Penitentary, one of the biggest maximum-security prisons in the country. The inmates maintain the course even though they are not allowed to play. That doesn’t seem fair to me for some reason.

Himalayan Golf Club – Nepal

Etched into a huge valley that rests among one of the most impressive and beautiful mountain ranges on the planet, Himalayan Golf Club will take your breath away along with a few dozen golf balls.
