Diving for golf balls in lakes and ponds within golf courses is good business. There’s even a TV show about the occupation coming this fall (shameless company plug).
But it’s also dangerous, and at the top of the list for on-the-job dangers are gators. Stephen Martinez knows all too well. For the second time in more than 20 years of diving for golf balls, the Florida man was bitten this week by a gator. The incident took place at Bonaventure Country Club in Weston, Fla., and Martinez did not suffer any serious injuries — nor is he deterred from diving for more golf balls.
“I still have my whole hand…but it sure hurts,” Martinez told the Sun Sentinel. “It feels like it was cut off.”
Martinez works for Birdie Golf Ball Co., and was working in a pond about 60-70 feet deep. Gators are pretty common at Bonaventure, as there are water hazards on 15 of the course’s 18 holes.
That means Martinez could be back in the future.
“It’s not just my job,” he said. “It’s an adventure.”
