When the USGA selected Pinehurst No. 2 as the host for not only the 2014 U.S. Open, but the U.S. Women’s Open the following week as well, it knew exactly how the course would look. Pinehurst No. 2 played like no other U.S. Open course in recent memory. The course got great reviews from players, with most of them loving the different look for the championship.
One man was not a fan of the course, however: Donald Trump.
Trump took to Twitter to voice his opinion about Pinehurst, and his “far superior” golf courses:
Turnberry in Scotland is a far superior golf course to Pinehurst – and it isn’t even close! Likewise the Blue Monster at Doral.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 14, 2014
I’d bet the horrible look of Pinehurst translates into poor television ratings. This is not what golf is about!

@MattGinellaGCSadly Matt, you don’t understand golf (even though you think you do).I have numerous couses that are far superior to Pinehurst
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 15, 2014
He even took a shot at one of Pinehurst’s trademark features: the turtleback greens.
Johnny Miller correctly very critical of greens at Pinehurst. Said they should be “redone”

I’m not quite sure the course will play into (possibly) poor television ratings, but Martin Kaymer dominating from start to end may have something to do with it. Kaymer never came close to relinquishing the lead, which could have caused some fans to lose interest.
A few players, including Ian Poulter and Luke Donald, disagreed with Trump’s critical comments:
Disagree D @realDonaldTrump I’d bet the horrible look of Pinehurst translates into poor television ratings. This is not what golf is about
— Ian Poulter (@IanJamesPoulter) June 15, 2014
I think if you played it @realDonaldTrump you would actually think it was a nice change from the norm. Great test of golf. Test all aspects.

Don’t agree“@realDonaldTrump: I’d bet the look of Pinehurst translates into poor television ratings. This is not what golf is about!”

4 people under par in the US Open on a course w/out rough! Bravo USGA. 1/2 the game is played from around the green. No need for thick rough
— Luke Donald (@LukeDonald) June 15, 2014
And to everybody bemoaning the golf course… One if the best tournament set ups I have ever seen.. Golf course was perfect.
