Back9Network ambassador Tony Jacklin spent some time in Augusta with Cheyenne Woods Follow @cheyennewoods to share his memories of competing in the Masters, including the Big Three’s brilliance, a young Johnny Miller and playing practice rounds with the incomparable Tom Weiskopf.
Tony Jacklin played in the Masters from 1967-1975. In those nine years, a lot of history was made at Augusta National:
- Jacklin’s best Masters finish was a T-12 in 1970. Later that year, he won the U.S. Open – remaining the only European to take that title until Graeme McDowell in 2010 at Pebble Beach.
- The winner’s check doubled from $20,000 to $40,000.
- Jack Nicklaus won twice in that span (1972, ’75). Before Jacklin’s first Masters start, Jack had won the last two Masters and three of the prior four.
- Gary Player was the only non-American to win in that stretch, in 1974. It would not be until Seve Ballesteros’ 1980 win that another foreign-born player aside from Player would win a green jacket.
- From ’67-’75, Jacklin won all four of his PGA Tour titles, including the ’69 Open Championship and the ’70 U.S. Open. His other two wins? In Jacksonville, Fla.
